**Replacement Stem**
This fascinating estate piece carries a rich slice of mid-century American tobacconist history: a Fader's Convertible. Fader's was an iconic, legendary name in Baltimore, Maryland, operating premium brick-and-mortar pipe shops from the late nineteenth century until the 2000s. Their "Convertible" line was a clever, proprietary engineering design from the mid-twentieth century, uniquely built with an internal configuration that allowed the smoker to effortlessly switch between a standard non-filtered smoke and a filtered one, depending on the stem arrangement or a removable adapter. Unfortunately, the stem was beyond repair and replaced with a non-Convertible stem.
The pipe is carved into a remarkably stout, crisp straight Pot or square-shanked Billiard variant. The stummel is dressed in a smooth, deeply polished walnut finish that shows off an impressive, highly expressive display of vertical flame grain dancing across the front and sides of the bowl, perfectly complemented by dense birds-eye swirls on the flat rim and underside. The wide, square shank transitions into a custom, non-original replacement stem. This replacement stem features a distinctive, caramel-mustard or butterscotch hue that creates an eye-catching, high-contrast aesthetic reminiscent of vintage bakelite or horn accents, adding a unique personalized character to this historic shop pipe.
The precise physical measurements for this American tobacconist classic are:
Overall Length: 5.35 inches
Chamber Width: 0.85 inches
Chamber Depth: 1.45 inches
With an exceptionally broad 0.85-inch chamber width paired with a 1.45-inch depth, this Pot shape is an absolute dream for complex, wide-cut blends. The wide surface area of the bowl allows English latakia mixtures, rich Balkan blends, or chunky boutique flakes to breathe fully, burning multiple component tobaccos simultaneously to deliver a deeply layered, full-bodied flavor profile. Thoroughly cleaned, sanitized, and carefully reconditioned with the custom stem precisely fitted, this rare piece of Baltimore smoking history is ready to bring excellent engineering and a uniquely styled look to your regular rotation.
