Merchant Service traces its identity to a little-known English pipe made in the late 1930s and reportedly favoured by a famous American crooner. Its signature pipe was an elongated billiard measuring roughly seven inches, distinguished by a chamfered rim, slender shank, long stem and lightweight construction. Original examples later became scarce and collectible. The modern Merchant Service line revives that British aesthetic in smooth, sandblasted and rusticated finishes, with a Standard model closely following the original bowl proportions and a larger Special model intended for longer smoking sessions. The company emphasizes well-aged briar, an open draw and reduced airway turbulence while keeping the pipes accessible in price.
From Merchant Service Pipes:
The Crimson Smooth finish is reserved for some of our best bowls. It is a new finish, a subtle contrast with rich tones of red but brighter in tone than our Antique Red finish.
Our “Standard” models are smaller overall than our “Specials” and more closely approximate the size of the original Merchant Service pipe.
