Custombilt Rusticated Pipe

This vintage estate piece is a marvelous, rugged slice of mid-century American pipe history: a Custombilt rusticated Bulldog. Originally founded by Tracy Mincer in 1938, Custombilt became legendary for celebrating massive, thick-walled blocks of briar and carving them into bold, aggressively styled shapes that flew directly in the face of conservative, slender European traditions.

This pipe is shaped into a squat, muscular straight Bulldog or Rhodesian profile. The stummel features Custombilt's signature deep, crater-like gouging and heavy hand-rustication, stained in a warm chestnut and auburn tone. This gives the piece immense visual character and an incredibly tactile, rugged grip. In spectacular contrast to the highly textured lower bowl and square shank, the swelling upper rim is left completely smooth and polished, featuring two crisp, incised score lines running around the circumference to emphasize the classic Bulldog cap. The smooth briar panel on the side of the shank proudly retains a crisp, vintage Custombilt Imported Briar stamping. The pipe is finished with a robust, short black vulcanite saddle stem that balances the chunky stummel perfectly.
