This estate piece is a beautiful, classic example of traditional French pipemaking heritage: a Chacom St. Claude, carved in the highly comfortable 214 shape. Situated in the historic Jura Mountains, the town of Saint-Claude is widely recognized as the birthplace of the modern briar pipe, and Chacom has spent generations acting as one of its primary torchbearers. The St. Claude series directly honors this deep regional history, offering traditional shapes finished with the crisp mechanics and elegant styling that French manufacturers perfected throughout the 20th century.
The stummel is sculpted into a compact, robust full-bent Billiard or rounded bent Apple variant, featuring a thick-walled bowl with a beautifully deep, sweeping heel. The briar is dressed in a smooth, high-gloss walnut and warm auburn finish, specifically formulated to highlight an excellent display of tight bird's-eye grain clustering across the flanks, transitioning into fine swirls of cross-grain along the front curve. The robust, upward-sweeping round shank displays crisp, classic factory nomenclature identifying the pipe as a Chacom creation. The shank transitions into a glossy, jet-black vulcanite saddle stem. The dramatic, tight bend drops the gravity center perfectly, ensuring an exceptionally balanced, weightless clench.
The precise physical measurements for this French classic are:
