This vintage estate piece is a fantastic example of classic Dutch design: an Amphora X-tra in the highly distinct shape 732. Produced by the historic Royal Factories of Elbert Gubbels & Zonen in the Netherlands—the same legendary outfit behind Big Ben pipes—the Amphora brand was highly celebrated for delivering exceptional briar quality and dependable mechanics to the mid-century market.

The pipe is carved into a sharp, forward-leaning Oom Paul or deeply bent Hungarian profile. The stummel features a rugged, deeply craggy sandblast or rusticated finish that is stained in a rich, dark chestnut hue, highlighting the dense ring grain swirling around the tall bowl. In elegant contrast to the heavily textured walls, the flat rim top is left entirely smooth and polished to show off the natural briar beneath. The high-sitting saddle stem features a graceful, sweeping bend designed to hang effortlessly from the jaw, making this large-profile pipe surprisingly comfortable and lightweight to clench.

The precise physical measurements for this Dutch classic are:

Overall Length: 5 inches
Chamber Width: 0.70 inches
Chamber Depth: 1.82 inches

With its focused 0.70-inch chamber width and an exceptionally deep 1.82-inch bowl, this pipe is an absolute powerhouse for long, slow-burning smoking sessions. It is particularly well-suited for fine ribbon-cut Virginias, burley flakes, or traditional cavendish blends, allowing the flavors to concentrate beautifully as the tobacco burns down the tall chamber. Fully cleaned, sanitized, and reconditioned to a great luster, this character-filled Amphora is ready to become a dependable favorite in your rotation.
