This estate piece is a highly unique, historically intriguing example of mid-century Canadian pipemaking heritage: a C.L.B. Extra, proudly stamped with the French-language manufacturing nomenclature "Fait Au Canada." In the golden age of 20th-century pipemaking, major Canadian department stores and tobacco distributors frequently contracted out premium private-label lines to respected domestic factories—such as Brigham or the Montreal-based Civic factory—to be stamped with custom brand names. The French stamping on the shank strongly indicates this piece was originally commissioned for the Quebec market or a French-Canadian distributor, adding a wonderful layer of regional social history to the pipe.
The stummel is sculpted into a tall, beautifully proportioned classic bent Brandy or tapered Billiard variant, featuring a thick-walled, insulating bowl with a lovely forward-leaning posture. The briar is finished in a smooth, high-gloss honey-amber lacquer designed to highlight the underlying wood. Flipping the pipe over reveals an impressive display of sweeping vertical flame grain and tight bird's-eye clustering enveloping the front and base of the bowl. The robust shank displays the crisp, deeply struck factory stamps identifying it as a C.L.B. Extra. The shank transitions flush into a classic, high-gloss black vulcanite saddle stem. The sweeping bend drops the gravity center perfectly, promising an effortless, comfortable clench.
