Established in Chicago in 1857, Iwan Ries & Co. is legendary as America's oldest family-owned tobacco shop, celebrated for their exceptional curated house pipes alongside premium imports. The Nature Smooth series represents a minimalist, pure approach to pipemaking, crafted from high-quality, aged briar stummels that were left completely unstained and untreated. This virgin finish allows the pipe to breathe exceptionally well, providing a highly prized, completely neutral flavor profile from the very first bowl, while ensuring the piece ages into a deeply personal heirloom.
The stummel is sculpted into a quintessential, textbook straight Pot silhouette, featuring a perfectly balanced, cylindrical bowl and a lean, straight shank. The select briar is left entirely smooth, showcasing a pristine, natural blonde grain configuration that reveals a delightful mix of fine cross-grain patterns and soft bird's-eye clusters across the flanks of the bowl. Because these pipes were left completely raw, the surface has begun to absorb the natural oils of the hands and tobacco heat, developing a lovely, unique golden-tan and light honey-amber patina that will continue to deepen with use. The straight shank transitions cleanly into a premium, jet-black vulcanite stem that tapers gracefully to a comfortable, slender bit, providing a lightweight clench, a balanced profile, and a perfectly open, unrestricted draw.
