This exceptional handmade estate piece is a stellar showcase of Canadian artisan history: a straight Panel Billiard crafted by the legendary John Calich. Operating out of the Greater Toronto Area for four decades until his passing in 2008, Calich was widely revered as one of Canada's premier full-time carvers, celebrated for his meticulous handwork and deeply expressive finishes.
This particular pipe highlights Calich's absolute mastery of texture. The stummel features his signature, incredibly rugged and deep rustication that has been carved with geometric precision into distinct flat panels along the bowl and the square-shaped shank. This deep, craggy texture provides a highly tactile and secure grip in the hand. In beautiful contrast to the heavily textured sides, the wide rim top is left entirely smooth and polished, highlighting the dense, premium briar underneath.
On the underside of the shank, the crisp, original stamping reads "CALICH" over "HAND MADE". The pipe is fitted with a hand-finished black vulcanite saddle stem that transitions seamlessly from the square shank, completing a bold, masculine silhouette with classic proportions.
