Erik Nørding began the Hunting Pipe series in 1995 as a yearly artistic release rather than a standard production line. Each year featured a new interpretation of form, typically emphasizing flowing lines, dramatic grain, and individuality. These pipes were never mass-produced in the traditional sense, making dated examples increasingly desirable among collectors.
This pipe is part of Erik Nørding’s celebrated Hunting Pipe series, an annual limited production released once per year, each edition dated and produced in finite numbers. The 1999 Quail Hunting Pipe represents late-20th-century Danish freehand design at its most refined—organic, expressive, and unmistakably Nørding.
The shape features a rounded, almost acorn-like bowl with flowing asymmetry and a forward cant that reflects Nørding’s signature interpretation of natural briar form. The bowl transitions smoothly into a sculpted shank, maintaining continuous movement without hard lines. Grain orientation is intentionally emphasized, with warm contrast staining highlighting both flame and cross grain.
Fitted is a hand-cut amber-toned acrylic stem, a hallmark of many Hunting Pipes from this era. The stem’s elongated taper and subtle curvature complement the bowl’s organic profile while providing excellent balance and comfort. The translucent material adds visual depth and was a defining aesthetic choice of the series.
