This pristine, New Old Stock piece is a legendary, historically significant masterpiece of mid-century Danish industrial design: a Stanwell Modele Depose Shape No. 87 straight Dublin/Bulldog hybrid. Hand-drawn specifically for the factory by the grandfather of modern artisan pipemaking, Sixten Ivarsson, this rare vintage specimen bears the highly coveted Modele Depose stamp, denoting Stanwell's early patent registration of Ivarsson's proprietary shapes. By blending organic, flowing lines with a starkly sculptural, avant-garde profile, this piece represents the exact historical moment where traditional English shape standards were revolutionized by the Danish freehand movement.
The stummel is sculpted into Ivarsson's iconic 87 pattern, which features an incredibly unique, forward-canted Dublin bowl characterized by a dramatically flared, shield-like upper rim that tapers sharply down to a narrow, rounded base. This creates a remarkably dynamic, asymmetric visual weight that fills the hand beautifully while providing massive wall thickness near the top of the chamber to insulate against heat. The choice, early-era Danish briar is dressed in a flawless, golden-amber smooth finish that showcases a breathtaking display of tight bird's-eye swirling across the flanks, complemented by a brilliant sunburst of flame grain expanding outward across the broad, flat crown of the rim. The low-slung, oval shank extends straight from the heel, meeting a hand-cut, jet-black vulcanite saddle stem adorned with the crisp, white crown-S factory logo.
