Peterson’s System pipe is one of the most recognizable designs in pipe making, with its origins in Charles Peterson’s late-nineteenth-century patents. The System combines a moisture reservoir, graduated bore, military mount and P-Lip stem in a design intended to provide a cooler, drier smoke. This Republic-era System Standard 317 is a compact bent System pipe, offering the traditional Peterson engineering in a smaller and very practical format. Measuring 4.57 inches long, it has a 0.62-inch chamber opening and a chamber depth of 1.24 inches. The pipe is stamped “Peterson’s System Standard,” “Made in the Republic of Ireland,” and “K&P,” making this an older Republic-era example of one of Peterson’s enduring System shapes.
