This estate piece is a legendary testament to the golden age of modern British pipemaking: a vintage Ashton Pebble Grain Blast, hand-carved in 1985 during the highly coveted early Bill Taylor era. After mastering his craft for over twenty years at Dunhill, Bill Taylor struck out on his own to revive the uncompromising standards of old-grade English manufacturing. The Pebble Grain line represents the absolute zenith of his early sandblasted work, treated to his proprietary oil-curing process that expands the briar cells and expels bitter resins before a single puff is taken. Stamped with the XX size designation, this piece strikes a perfect balance between a comfortable, mid-sized hand feel and an incredibly resilient, heat-resistant chamber. Today, early family-era Ashtons from the mid-1980s are passionately collected worldwide, prized for their historical engineering, exceptional flavor clarity, and remarkable lightweight execution.
The stummel is sculpted into a dynamic, fluid bent Billiard variation, featuring an elegant, forward-leaning bowl and an upward-sweeping shank. The choice briar is treated to an exceptionally deep, craggy sandblast texture, dressed in a traditional rich maroon and dark chestnut contrast stain that accentuates a dense network of growth rings and fine, pebbled growth structure along the bowl flanks. The rim top is left smoothly polished and clean, showing off a dark crimson sheen that coordinates beautifully with the textured stummel. The oval shank transitions smoothly into a striking, brindle vulcanite saddle stem with warm streaks of copper and dark chocolate. The comfortable stem retains Ashton's signature thin button and is stamped with the classic elongated white dot emblem, offering a brilliant draw and superb clenching comfort.
