This unsmoked artisan piece is a monumental, awe-inspiring display of classical Italian design and neoclassical craftsmanship: a brand new Ser Jacopo Maxima R1. Founded by Giancarlo Guidi in 1982 in Pesaro, Italy, Ser Jacopo is world-renowned for making robust, expressive shapes that prioritize maximum briar density and structural presence. The Maxima designation represents the peak of their sizing hierarchy, reserved exclusively for giant, oversized briars. In Ser Jacopo's traditional coding system, the R1 stamp designates their iconic dark brown or plum rusticated finish. This specific pipe is a completely new, unsmoked example of their rusticated line, featuring an incredible juxtaposition of deeply carved textures and pristine smooth accents that make it a highly prized centerpiece for any collector of high-grade Italian briars.
The stummel is sculpted into a muscular, oversized shape showing off an extra-thick bowl that transitions seamlessly into a wide, powerful shank. The exterior of the stummel is carved with Ser Jacopo’s famous, deeply pocketed house rustication, which creates a highly tactile, bark-like texture across the bowl walls and the upper ridge of the shank. This rugged surface is dressed in a warm dark brown contrast stain, while the expansive rim top is left entirely smooth, showcasing the pristine golden briar and tight grain beneath. The entirely smooth under-panel of the shank features remarkably deep, crisp factory nomenclature, displaying the Maxima name, the R1 finish mark, an A stamp, the Ser Jacopo signature, and the brand's historic Latin motto, PER ASPERA AD ASTRA. The hefty shank terminates flush into a thick, hand-cut black acrylic stem.
